da 888: Tottenham Hotspur take on RB Leipzig in the Champions League Round of 16 but what challenge awaits them against the German side?
On the chalkboard
da betway: Leipzig sit second in the Bundesliga ahead of their clash with leaders Bayern Munich this weekend, one point behind the Bavarian giants.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side have lost just three games in the top-flight this season but this is a particularly tight title race in Germany; both Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach, in third and fourth, sit just three points off Bayern and two off Leipzig.
This season, Nagelsmann’s men have won 12 of their 20 games, drawn five and lost three, scoring 53 goals and conceding 25. Only Bayern and Dortmund have scored more goals, while the pair have both conceded fewer goals, along with Bayer Leverkusen.
In the top-flight, they have averaged 17.1 shots per game, per WhoScored, along with 7.2 shots on target, 11.9 dribbles, 18.7 tackles, and 54.9% possession.
They have a number of goalscoring threats, too. Striker Timo Werner has scored 20 goals in just 20 Bundesliga appearances, while Marcel Sabitzer and Patrick Schick have seven and five respectively.
Werner has also registered six assists, with only Christopher Nkunku, with seven, having a higher number.
Leipzig, though, have been out of form in recent weeks, losing twice to Eintracht Frankfurt, once in the league and once in the DFB Cup, and also drawing with Borussia Monchengladbach.
In the Champions League, they topped a group also featuring Lyon, Benfica, and Zenit St Petersburg, losing just once and winning three of those games.
Werner the threat
Werner’s incredible pace and finishing ability is a massive threat to Spurs.
Along with his 20 league goals, he has scored three times in the Champions League, and twice in the DFB-Pokal.
The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?
In the league, he enjoyed an astonishing run of scoring in seven consecutive games, netting 12 goals in the process, including a hat-trick against Mainz and braces versus Hertha Berlin, Hoffenheim, and Borussia Dortmund.
If Spurs are to have any hope of recording a result over two legs, Werner needs to be stopped.
He is an exceptionally quick forward and he is not only a central striker, given that he can also play on the left wing.
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho’s main task is finding a way to keep him quiet.
Meanwhile, Spurs are thrilled at the prospect of one man’s return!
