da lvbet: Last weekend was nothing short of spectacular as Oxford produced an amazing rearguard performance to defeat top of the table Swindon Town.
For several years now (especially in the Conference) we have seen many teams come to the Kassam Stadium who sit back and frustrate United to come away with a point or more. That was the kind of performance that the U’ themselves put in last Saturday and it felt very satisfying to be on the winning side.
This win is even more impressive as we played pretty much the whole game with ten men when James Constable was sent off for an alleged elbow.
It was a weekend of joy and excitement, but now it’s time we look onwards to the rest of the season. That means it is important to leave this result now, take no notice of whatever Swindon do for the rest of the season, and focus on consolidating a playoff place at least. We could do the automatic route but it will take a huge effort to leapfrog the teams near the top.
Towards the end of the season there are several teams in and around the promotion mix that United have to face which could play a major part in who goes up automatically and who faces the playoffs. One of them was only three days after the ‘A420 derby’ as Oxford travelled to Shrewsbury, a team that haven’t lost at Greenhous Meadow for over a year.
At 2-0 up we were cruising but the Shrews proved just why they have that impressive home record with two stunning strikes to grind out a point. This was still a very impressive result despite throwing away the two goal lead and demonstrates that the U’s are still heading in the right direction.
Chris Wilder has said this week that they won’t be appealing Constable’s red card from the derby match and took a dig at the Robin’s players for their behaviour. Wilder said: “I wasn’t too pleased with the reaction of the opposition players running 50 or 60 yards to get involved.”
In light of the ban, he has brought in Chesterfield’s 28-year-old striker Dean Morgan on a month’s loan. Morgan is another forward who can play up-front or as a wide man and looks set to provide cover while ‘Beano’ is suspended. With Alfie Potter, Jon-Paul Pittman, and Tom Craddock all also out with injuries Morgan can expect to go straight into the squad and play a role in the trip to Bradford on Saturday where we will hope to maintain our fine current form.
