Speaking to The Telegraph, former Manchester United ace Adnan Januzaj has revealed some of the reasons behind why his career at Old Trafford didn’t pan out.
What did he say?
Given his debut by David Moyes, the Belgium international enjoyed an incredible start for the Red Devils by scoring a brace against Sunderland. The forward was eventually rewarded with a long-term contract at the club, but following Moyes’ dismissal, things went sour.
The 24-year-old failed to get a look-in under both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, and left on a permanent deal in 2017. Now, the Belgian has claimed he may have been given more of a chance if he was bought for a large transfer fee, rather than coming through the ranks at United.

He said: “Imagine, for example, if I had started here at Real Sociedad and I could have been bought for, I don’t know, a lot of money (by United). It would have been different. There, I was an academy player, came through the youth and it felt different. Now, if you pay £60-70 million for a player he has more chance to play than you. That’s how football is.
“I was really young. I started in the first team and it’s even harder to take criticism when you are such a young player, but, obviously, people were expecting a lot from me. I wanted to show those people but I didn’t have that small chance to do it.”
Right place at the wrong time
Now plying his trade in Spain with Sociedad, Januzaj may well look across at United at the moment and have a feeling of ‘what if’. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed his intentions to build a youthful side at Old Trafford, and give chances to those who deserve it, regardless of their age or experience.
The Belgian was unfortunate in breaking through at a time when United were struggling to create an identity after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure. Had he emerged onto the scene in the past year, then there is no doubting that someone of the 24-year-old’s talent would have been in with a chance of making his name in the first-team.
