da brdice： Wayne Rooney’s father and uncle have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in a betting scandal, but the England forward has received the backing of his international manager and team-mates.
The Manchester United striker’s dad, also called Wayne, and uncle Ritchie Rooney, were bailed after their homes were raided by police on Thursday.
The investigation is related to irregular betting patterns on a game between Hearts and Motherwell on December 14th 2010, and Liverpool-born Motherwell player Steve Jennings has also been questioned.
“Detectives have today executed warrants at 10 addresses across Merseyside and Glasgow and arrested nine men as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity,” an official police statement read.
“The arrests are the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission and the nine who have been arrested for conspiracy to defraud are being interviewed by detectives.
“Those arrested are a 29-year-old from Bootle, a 48-year-old from West Derby, a 54-year-old from Norris Green, a 26-year-old from Croxteth, a 22-year-old from Kirkdale, a 31-year-old from Litherland, a 68-year-old from Fazakerley, a 36-year-old from Kirkby and a 26-year-old from Glasgow.
“The investigation relates to a match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14 2010,” it concluded.
Rooney’s father has pleaded his innocence and has agreed to co-operate fully with police in their investigations.
Meanwhile both Fabio Capello and John Terry have backed the attacker to put the news behind him, and the Italian coach has confirmed that Rooney will play against Montenegro on Friday.
I spoke to him just five minutes ago,” Capello told reporters.
“I found him relaxed and calm. There is no problem for the game; he will play against Montenegro. He told me there are no problems.”
Rooney has started the 2011-12 campaign in scintillating form, and is an integral member of England’s side, that can qualify for Euro 2012 with a draw against their Eastern European opponents.
